On to Akron, OH!

(Skyline of Akron, OH)

Hey guys! Chairman Charlie Smith and myself will be traveling to one of the most targeted states in this campaign, Ohio. We will join OH State Chairman Dan Lipian and the rest of the OH College Republicans for their convention in Akron, OH. We're looking forward to an eventful weekend. Now, let's talk about Akron, shall we? Besides the fact that I know that LeBron James grew up there, that's really all I know. So, I go to the one source that hasn't failed me yet: Wikipedia. Not only does Akron hold a population of nearly 210,000 (as of 2006), but it is known as the Rubber Capital of the World. The first rubber company was established by B.F. Goodrich (sound familiar) in 1869, thus soon after, the tire was born... as well as those bouncy balls you pay a fifty cents for at Pizza Hut. For more information on this city's history, click here.

Now that I have put each one of you to sleep, I'll keep you posted on Sunday about the happenings of the weekend!

57 States?

Wow, Barack Obama is really about taking the country in a new direction. He has been to 7 other states that we've never seen or heard of before and is about to head to one more. I just wonder when our government will reveal these mystery states to us.

And he says that Senator McCain is losing his bearings...

NJ Convention Recap!

(Incoming NJCR State Chairman, Terrance Grado)

This weekend, CRNC Treasurer and GA State Chairman Esther Clark and myself made the trip up the NJ Turnpike to Hackensack, NJ for the 2008 NJCR Convention. Many speakers from Senate and Congressional candidates to lobbyists spoke and urged us as young voters to get involved and reach out to our generation.

Outgoing State Chairman Chris Stark passed on his duties to Terrance Grado, who attends The College of New Jersey. Terrance promised to focus on three things during his tenure: Unity, Recruitmen, and Fundraising. The rest of the executive panel was elected unanimously, adjourning the convention with a sense of optimism and anticipation for the election season. Esther and I were honored to attend and send our thanks to the NJCR's for making us feel welcome.

Until next time, friends, stay tuned to see what else comes up in the Life in the Field!

Flashback 2006...

As you can see above, that's me with a certain US Olympic medalist, Michelle Kwan. How did our paths cross? I'll tell you...

In the fall of 2006, I was on the campus of Denver University, recruiting College Republicans. In the distance I noticed someone on crutches, hobbling through the plaza. She asked if she could sit next to my table and I told her of course and through a sign up sheet in front of her (Note: Still did not know she was Michelle Kwan). She was a little hesistant because she didn't want to give out her phone number and she had to run an errand real quick. So, I waited and she hobbled back to my area. As she picked up the sign up sheet for a second time, I told her she needed to put some form of contact information so that we could get in touch with her (Note: Even still did not know I was talking to Michelle Kwan).

Then, the wheels started to turn. Where do I know this girl? What a tick... Winter Olympics (yes, I do watch figure skating when it comes to Olympic coverage!) and thought, "Hey, she looks like Michelle Kwan..." So, here's how the remainder of the conversation went:

Me: You know, you look a lot like Michelle Kwan...

Michelle Kwan: Oh really? I get that a lot...

Me: Oh ok. Well, what's your name then?

Michelle Kwan: Oh, its Michelle Kwan.

And that's how the Denver University College Republicans got Kwan...

Live To Fight Another Day...

That's right. Our friends on the left side of the isle will duke it out for at least till the May 6th primaries (NC and IN). And as I know I'm okay with the prolonging struggle, our nominee Sen. John McCain is just as content to letting the Dem's go at it for as long as they need. I tell ya, I bet the DNC wishes they could implement a timetable to withdraw from this battle.

The Weekend Wrap Up!

(Kentucky CR's)
Convention complete! The KFCR's held a very solid and entertaining convention at the University of Kentucky on Saturday, April 18, 2008. However, they kicked off the weekend with a buffet dinner at Malone's, where we got to fellowship with Kentucky CR's from around the state and hear from local candidates around the area. (Coach Gillepsie of UK was there also! We tried to get him to come up and say a few words, but he was with some recruits. Supposedly, he's a Republican though, so either way, go Coach!).

(The KFCR with Senator Mitch McConnell)

Saturday's festivities were held at Seay Auditorium at the University of Kentucky at around 9 AM. The KFCR did not hold back from starting the convention off with a bang as we heard from Senate Republican Leader Senator Mitch McConnell! He gave a very informative and inspiring speech on the life and times in the Senate floor as well as what we have to do as Republicans in November. He wrapped up the Democratic oppenents in three words: taxation, regulation, and litigation. Those are the ideas that not only are they for, but they are in favor of increasing for Americans. He also opened the floor for questioning and was an amazing person to speak and hear from. As his job in the Senate is to stop "bad ideas," we as Republicans need to do all we can to keep Senator McConnell at that post to halt these bad ideas and make sure Republican values have a place in our country. Not only that, but Senator McConnell has a lot to do with the shift in KY politics in the past couple decades from Democrat to Republican. Thank you Senator for the hard work you do and the even harder work you're getting ready to do this November!

(J. Scott Jennings)

Later that day, we heard from one of Karl Rove's right hand men, Former White House Deputy Director of Political Affairs, J. Scott Jennings. He gave us an inside look in the White House, telling us stories that ranged from the daily in's and out's to helping the President chase down the turkey before the Annual Turkey Pardoning Ceremony. Also, he told us about his involvement in New Mexico and how he was able to swing that state into the President's column in 2004. It was great to hear from someone who was put in a situation where he had to start from scratch and, in the end, was able to produce one of President Bush's key wins in 2004. He was a great encouragement and motivator to us all, empowering us to never give up or get beaten down by liberal pressure, but to press on and fight the good fight. I enjoyed hearing him speak.

(From L to R: Treasurer Andrew Carroll, Louisville; 1st Vice Chair Jacob Sims, University of Kentucky; Secretary Shane Noem, Western Kentucky; 2nd Vice Chair Charles Badger, Berea College; State Chairman Justin May, Morehead State)

Now, of course, on to the elections! Every seat ran unopposed, so the KFCR has a new executive team! Led by State Chairman Justin May, each candidate pledged to work hard, help raise financial support, as well as build up recruitment in the fall. They all seem determined and energized to really get the ball rolling in anticipation for the fall. I look forward to working with Justin and the new KFCR team this fall.

Well, that just about does it, folks. There were good speeches, good fellowship, good eats. I see no downside here! So far, it has been 4 states in 4 weekends for me. Could this be the last leg of my journey? We'll see!

Next Stop: Lexington, Kentucky!

(Downtown Lexington, KY)

This weekend I meet up with State Chairman Brent Burchett and the rest of the Kentucky CR's. Such speakers include Sen. Mitch McConnell as well as one of the brightest and youngest GOP talents, Scott Jennings. Elections will be held and votes will be cast for this year's new leadership. A good crowd is expected to attend this year's festivities, which will be held at the University of Kentucky. As always, I like to reveal a little fact I've stumbled along while preparing myself for the weekend. I found out that Lexington is the "Horse Capital of the World." However, in my search, I found that Ocala, Florida as well as New Market in England thought of themselves as "The Horse Capital." So, who did I turn to? Jeeves. And he led me here. Apparently, Calumet Farm is renown as one of the legendary horse farms in the world. The person who wrote the article is really gung-ho about this place, so I encourage you to take her side on the matter. (She says that Lexington spelled "adventure" with a capital "A" for her.... Interesting). Nonetheless, I am excited and ready to see this weekend's events. Stay tuned for the this weekend's outcome!
